A Legend Passes…

English: Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, Gaute...

The sad news has just broken that the gentle giant of peace and freedom, a bastion of hope and courage and a symbol of the strength of the human soul, Nelson Mandela, has passed away at the age of 95.

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live, Nelson Mandela had an indelible spirit that couldn’t help but inspire you. A man of such dignity, eloquence and strength, he symbolised for a whole nation and in fact the whole world, how peace can overcome the worst situations. Every challenge he endured, he faced with tremendous grace. He has influenced millions, by his words and his actions. An idealist, a freedom fighter, a man of great power and humanity. Nelson Mandela on Day After Release

More than anything, Nelson Mandela, showed in the aftermath of the hideous apartheid regime, how forgiveness can bridge the gap between peoples. At a time when black South Africans had at last emerged from the dreadful clutches of white oppression, there was no hint of revenge, despite how justified it would have been. Instead, Mandela, united a divided nation, a divided people and preached peace and reconciliation. He sacrificed 27 years of freedom for the freedom of others.

A monumental loss, I truly believe that Nelson Mandela deserves to be sainted, as a symbol of strength, justice, peace and hope for all peoples – that we can all conquer our irrational fears, phobias and prejudices and unite in peace as one people under the sun.

Mandela for Sainthood.

An icon of unity…

Rest in Peace dear Nelson Mandela (18th July 1918 – 5th December 2013). xxxx

  1. Re-blogging this Sophie, he was a very great man and as you say should be sainted for all his work and beliefs in freedom and equality. A great loss to the world.:(

As you said, Sophie, a huge loss to the world. I can’t imagine enduring the hardships he did, and coming out the other end as he did, a wonderful, caring human being.

    • I know, such a great propensity for forgiveness. I don’t think I’d be that forgiving if I’d been treated like that and lost 27 years of my life. Just shows what an amzing person he was. Very sad. 😦

  4. A great loss to mankind. We can only hope there will be another.

    (Great snowflakes, by the way)

    • Sadly, I don’t think there will be. He was something of a one-off, able to put his own mistreatment aside and forgive those who oppressed him, I really don’t think I’d be that forgiving. Truly a great man of wisdom and peace. 😦

  5. This post is a lovely tribute, Sophie.

  6. It is a great loss to the world. I love the quote you have in the image in it. So many could learn from his recognition of his own mistakes.!

    • Absolutely! He described himself as not being an angel, though I think many of us think he was, but his ability to forgive others for all the harm they caused is truly inspiring!
